Happy New Year to all readers.....Our first book club of the year met at Keiko's house on a Tuesday night.....The day was crazy with threats of rainstorms, winds etc. A flurry of texts went back and forth about who was attending in person or who was attending by Zoom.
In person attendance ended up being; Laura, Debbie, Janet, Lisa H, Keiko(host), Pam, and Mitra.
On zoom were Lynn K, Kirsten, and Marlyn....Lisa E and Madge couldn't make it.
We started by listing our best and worst choices of the previous year's books....Although choices were varied the clear choice of best was awarded to DemonCopperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. We all agreed when a book is good it is truly apparent.
This month's selection was Trust by Hernan Diaz. (A Pulitzer Prize winner)
Scores were variable with several people really liking it to some people being confused by the structure of the book. Mitra really liked it and gave it a five.......The plot revolves around a successful financier and his wife who not only survived the crash of 1929 but thrived and added to their wealth. The story is told through 4 perspectives...Book one is a fictional account, book two is the financier's perspective, book three is told through the lens of the woman hired to write the story, and the final installment is told through the diary of the wife... Pam gave a terrific synopsis of the book....
The discussion this evening was thoughtful and thought provoking...When views about books are varied it alway provides a more interesting discussion.....Keiko even had some payday candies to integrate the theme.
Overall it was an interesting way to start the new year in books....
